This was what Riaan wrote for us a week before he set off. We wonder how his untested ideoligies compare two years, 34 countries and 37 000km later ?
This is a question that i've been asked more than I can remember... but i still don't have the "right" answer. but here goes...
The desire for African adventure was the catalyst to all that I hope to achieve with my trip. Over the 18 months its taken to prepare for AFRICA365, the desire has lead me to many other opportunities which I believe are worthy of support. But adventure... adventure... adventure...
My vision is to assist the African Renaissance by cycling around the entire coastline of Africa. In doing so, I hope to generate both local and international awareness of just how dire the standard of living is in Africa. My aim is not to change the world, but to give this continent’s upliftment schedule a shot in the arm through education. Education of not only the children I will meet along the way, but also of the powers-that-be both here in South Africa and abroad.
As an ambassador of the Proudly South African campaign, I believe that it is only proper that South Africa takes the lead in the uplifting of all the other nations with whom we share this continent.
Education is the only way: educating multinational corporations to look beyond our borders for investment opportunities to uplift impoverished nations by improving education and healthcare standards; educating citizens of impoverished nations to support themselves through home-industries and subsistence farming etc.
All this requires effort and time and this is my personal commitment to finding those opportunities for upliftment.
Come on, get involved in something different and real; come join me on an unpredictable adventure around Africa.
Becoming the first man to circumnavigate the entire african continent by bicycle
